My friend and I were arguing about this. So what is the answer? Do they keep 'em for posterity or throw 'em away?

In the case of students that were accepted, but plan on not attending, some schools send them letters telling them of their policy with regard to this. From the letters I’ve seen, they hold on to them for 2 years typically. It may vary from school to school.

Cool. If I was a college I think I would hold on to them for longer, in case someone lied blatantly on their application.

Two years is good though. I probably wouldn’t be comfortable with more because some applications have private/emotional stuff in them, or at least mine did.

Thanks for the response.

What if you attend? Is the application held for posterity?

Huh what do you mean by this?
