How long does it take for entering freshmen to get used to college life?

I'm the type of person who doesn't really enjoy changes or new experiences (heck, I'm even a bothered by really insignificant changes like getting new furniture in our house!), so I'm a bit worried about getting accustomed to making the transition from high school to college, even though the excitement is there as well. How long does it usually take to know where each building/classroom is, and just get used to living the new lifestlye? Do freshmen carry around maps of the campus on their first couple of days until they are familiar with all the locations and stuff? I know this all may just sound like pointless worries, but I'm just really nervous about college.

im ready for college too, i think that getting use to doing whatever you want is probably the biggest thing, but i mean we still need to go to class and do work

Probably the first couple of weeks.

It took me about two weeks to know where the buildings are, memorize my classes etc… Don’t worry abt the lifestyle, it is not that different. It’s basically been with your schoolmates 24/7 and enjoy it with no parenting. Just make sure you put your readings and homework before fun.

Here’s a little advice about scheduling:
Do all you classes on ONE round. Meaning, don’t take one class at 9-10:15AM then have 2nd one at 5PM. Its best to do it like 9 to 10:15AM then 10:30 to 11:45. I made this mistake on my first two semesters. If you leave a big gap between your classes, it will be waaaaay harder to fit in someone extra curricular activities in your schedule. Especially if you start a dif. time each day

I feel ya! I got sad when my calculator of 6 years died on me…dammit.
Anyway, in my school freshman move in a week or two before school begins to avoid the map situation.
If you allow yourself to be dynamic and set a schedule for yourself I think you’ll be fine. There will be learning curves for all of us but we’ll make it through! :)

It’s different for each first-year. Learning the campus and adjusting to the academics probably won’t take you more than a couple of weeks.

Actually adjusting to college life to the point where you have some friends, feel at home on your campus, feel comfortable with the workload and balancing your studying with your social life, without mom and dad and teachers reminding you every step of the way about deadlines and good habits? That can take anywhere from a few months until well into your sophomore year. There’s no one answer.

around a few days to know where the important spots on campus are… maybe around semester to actually realize the realities of college life.

and please remember 1/4 of the students on campus also will not know where anything is or have a lot of friends on campus … it’s a big change and takes time … but lots of folks are in the same boat as you!
