How long is too long regarding the "Why Chicago" essay?

Mine is like 730 words, over 200 more than my common app. Is that crazy?

I just feel like everything I say is key to the overall essay and without it, I wouldn't get my point across as well.

Should be fine; if you really have so much to say, good for you.

That is way too long for the shorter answer questions. They are meant to be concise for a reason. UChicago suggests keeping the word limit under 500 words for the “Why Chicago?” question and the “Favorite Things” question. Even the extended essay is recommended to be 600 words and no more than one page (single spaced).

Although they will not stop reading your essay after 500 words, you should be thoughtful of college admission officers who have to review hundreds of applications every week. It is a skill in college to edit papers to fit recommended standards. If your paper falls under the line of being circumlocutory, then that may be considered when reviewing your applications.

Conciseness is key. I am certain that you would be able to cut 200 words from your essay. You will find a way, just keep trying. Heck, I took the opposite route…my essay was 450/500 words, and I am doubtful many people used fewer instead of more words.

It should be fine. Chicago is like the one school that does not really care about essay lengths
