How long should a Cornell University Engineering Essay be?

Hi,
This year engineering essay limit is 650 words. How long do you think an ideal essay should be? Do you think if 389 words are OK? Should I add more and make it 450-500?

You are 700+ points shirt on the SAT.

They won’t read your essay

Don’t be so sure, I heard people who are admitted with 1300s. I just need an answer for the question

Sub 500 on an SAT section at Cornell is 0.0% per their data set.

You have sub 400 on two parts.

Your chances are 0.0%.

OP, we don’t want to be mean or discouraging but they need people who can make their way through college as the curriculum and such is very rigorous there.

Such a low score will tell them you would not be capable of handling the rigour hence they will outright deny your application as they don’t want to accept you and watch you suffer.

Hence, improve your scores, GPA and everything else before even coming close to applying to such schools. But I have a feeling that its too late for that now, so just apply to community college and transfer from there as money is not an issue for you.

You should really try to use as much of the word limit as you can. The limit is 650 words, so anything less than 550 is probably bad. Around 600-650 is good because then the difference between 600 words to exceeding the word limit is a couple of sentences.

That being said, people are saying your SAT is very low; I’m not sure where the data is or if you edited it out, but I’m going to go off what they’re saying.

700+ per SAT section makes you a viable candidate. 600+ per SAT section isn’t necessarily the best situation, but you will still be considered depending on other factors. Once we get to 500 and below, your chances are diminished greatly. If you really did score sub 400, and on two parts, I’m afraid to say your chances are borderline non-existent (for the reasons stated by @tyronium ).

That being said, there’s always the 1 student who may get accepted every few years despite a horrible SAT score for a very special reason. That’s why I say your chances aren’t exactly 0. They’re <0.5% most likely, but there’s always a possibility for something.

Enough to make your essay complete.
