How many admission officers or dept. professors review your application?

I know at some schools the department you are applying to decides if you are in or not. In this case, how many people are reviewing your application? Also, if one person in the department really wants you to be accepted, are you pretty much in?

many thanks

bump,,,,,,,,

I've heard it's something like a council; it's around five people who look at the app and do whatever.

I've heard from a couple of different colleges that one person will look at each application, and by his or her self, determine whether that candidate is an 'automatic in
, a 'maybe', or an 'automatic no'. Then comes the committee, which sorts out the maybes.

The more selective colleges that look carefully at the apps usually have two readers. If there is a wide variance in scores, it goes to a third or to committee.

I had a nice chat with one of the Admissions Officers at Stanford during Admit Weekend. She said that two readers read each application and then it is presented before committee (where there is a vote).
