I am trying to predict CMC's admit rate for this years applying class. So how many people applied this year?

a little over 4200 people applied. feel free to predict… i’ll let you know if you’re right or close

I would guess 19%

nope. it’ll be lowerr

i was at mckenna scholars weekend, and according to one of the admisisons officers they expect an admissions rate at around 13-14 percent. who knows for sure though.

yea… i was told maybe 15-16 percent.

reason for that:
-they’re trying to yield about 280 for the class of 2013, that’s 40 something less people than class of 2012
-accepted 799/4178 for class of 2012 to yield 320+ people, SOO they have to accept 100 less people than that, but the number of applicants is 4200+.

therefore… you can expect about a 3-4 percent decrease in the admission rate.

don’t fret though! you’ll know on the 26th for now, just keep being optimistic (but not too hopeful)

best of luck to you all :)

Oh dear. That’s not good.

lolllll cmc…

lol what’s so funny?

I have the exact stats for you guys.

We had 4276 applicants, and we have accepted 15%.

Decisions come out thursday… I’m anxious too and I already come here hahahhaa

juggly-- wondering where your numbers for last year (and this year for that matter) came from.

According to section C1 of the CMC Common Data Set (CDS…the official reporting doc for US News etc) for '08-'09( http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/ir/cds.php ), which represents data for the freshman class of 2012,
- 3,670 applied
- 800 were accepted (resulting in a calculated 21.8% accept rate)
- and, 320 enrolled
for the fall 2008 semester. These numbers should be inclusive of the 316 ED apps and 88 ED accepted (section C21).

So, relative to your numbers in post #6, the number of applied looks way off (by 500 or so) but accepted & enrolled correspond.

Looking at the CDS history, the applications pattern in the high 3,000’s looks consistent…
Apps for Fall 2008 = 3670
Apps for Fall 2007 = 3778
Apps for Fall 2006 = 3593
Apps for Fall 2005 = 3734
Apps for Fall 2004 = 3528

As there must be some explanation for this bust, where did you derive the 4178 number for last year’s apps, and the 4276 number for this year’s apps?..& do you know what your reported numbers include? [Even if I throw in transfer apps (section D of the CDS), which is not a common thing to do, I cannot get up to your numbers.]

Not sure about the CDS disparity, but 4178 applicants comes from:

[Freshman Class Profile, Claremont McKenna College](http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/admission/fr-class-profile.php)

The other applicant number came from our student newspaper

[The Forum|The News and Opinions of Claremont McKenna College](http://thecmcforum.com/)

I’m not going to even try to guess why the numbers don’t match up?

thanks skyhawkk08-- only guess I can come up with is that the larger reported numbers (4178 and 4276) include both complete and incomplete applications, whereas the CDS expressly instructs that only complete applications be counted. Just a guess, in part based on what I’ve seen happen at other institutions.

PC, you’ll find another reason for the changes in reported application numbers in the correct disclosure of applications that use the Common Application. The differences seem to arise for schools that have supplements (essays). Richard Vos explained how CMC decided to change the manner in which the school reported the total applications a couple of years ago. When there is a gap between the disclosure of the preliminary applications and the fully completed applicatons, you’ll see that schools might have to “downgrade” the original number reported.

At the end, there are schools that prefer to report the applications correctly, others that are forced to do so because of the changes in the Common Applications, and … then you have schools that still love to count everything from an application that contains nothing more than the name, or even a reply to a simple postcard.

thanks xiggi, should have figured you would have some insight on this one…btw, I have an ecstatic daughter on my hands who just got the thumbs up an hour or so ago from your alma mater!

From the acceptance letter:

For your class we received 4,274 applications for 280 freshman openings.

Oh PC, that is such thrilling news. While it is unfortunate that about 85% of the applicants do not receive the expected news, getting the letter signed by Richard Vos is very sweet. I hope your daughter will consider attending CMC and find it as rewarding as I did.

Congratulations to your daughter!
