I'm planning to take six APs by the end of my junior year, although I might want to take eight to be eligible for the National Scholar Award. For my sophomore year, I want to self-study psychology and statistics. In junior year, I plan to take Biology, Calc AB, US History, and English Language. I may want to self-study Euro, Env. Sci, and maybe even Comp. Government in any of those years. Do you think if I add more APs, it will become too difficult, and if not, when should I take them?

for me, i took two ap classes (ap chem and ap world) at my school, since that was the max for a sophomore. I was meanwhile studying ap calc to have an upper hand in the class next year, but then i chose to sign up for the ap exam. The problem with ap calc was that i had three months to study the rest of the required chapters and review what i learned. By the time it was May, it became really stressful for me. Junior year -Plan to study the exams of AP English Language and Composition, AP United States History, AP Physics B, AP Calculus BC (partially self-study), AP European History (self-study), and AP Microeconomics (self-study) to earn the National AP Scholar Award.

So, for sophomore year, if u add one more self-study course, you’ll be fine. don’t know about your plan for junior.

Well for me, I can’t take any AP classes in sophomore year; I have to self-study in order to take the exams. And Calc AB is offered in Junior year, leaving Calc BC in my senior year. Also, Physics C is offered in senior year, so would it be necessary to self-study Physics B? (I’m also taking an honors physics course junior year.)

I was only able to take APUSH my sophomore year. Don’t do more than you think you can handle. Self-studying is not such a great idea if you can take the class. The biggest reason for this is becuase when you self-study you don’t remember nearly as much as taking a year-long class. Also, the point of AP testing is to give students an opportunity to use their AP class at school as a college class. Thus AP tests are pretty much finals.
Anyway, psychology is an easy self-study, so I would definitely recommend it (I got a 5 on that test, and use Barron’s). Stats is manageable, but I would recommend taking the class. Good luck with your AP adventure!

So would you think my sophomore year self-study schedule of Psych, Stat, and Euro be too much to handle? I’m also involved with cross country and track all-year.

To be honest, I would leave out the Euro. It might be harder. Psych and Stats are manageable. You just need the discipline to study.

Well, I’m taking 6 sophomore year with 2-3 self studies.

To me, how many APs doesn’t matter, it’s how much you can get in college (and how many classes you can get out of). Really, take all the APs you want, they don’t guarantee useful credit nor do they add a whole lot to an application (tons of students take APs).
