Approximately how many reach, match, and safety schools is a good amount to apply to? Also how do I determine if a more selective school (like NYU as an example) is a reach or a match? Even if I have the "average stats" is it still considered a reach because it is selective?

Note that a “safety” must be both an admissions safety and a financial safety (net cost after (worst case) non-loan financial aid must be affordable). Obviously, you have to be willing to attend your “safety” school.

Some students use community college with the aim of transferring later to a four year university as their “safety”. Some others end up doing this because they did not choose their “safeties” properly (either not getting admitted to any four year university, or getting admitted only to schools that are financially unaffordable). The latter are probably more likely to be disappointed than the former who were willing from the beginning to attend community college.
