Okay, so I'm in for Aerospace Engineering and I've reviewed course catalogs and I've seen what is required for my major. I understand that Texas A&M shows how it can be done in 4 years however I'm already thinking that 4 years will be too much too soon. I've heard most engineers tend to finish in 4.5 and sometimes 5 years.

With this being said, I'm curious as to what you guys think is a reasonable amount of credits per semester that would allow me to get the most done without feeling too overloaded.

Also, I'm wondering if it's best to take the least amount of credits freshmen year and ease up in the number of credits per semester of that's a bad idea.

Any recommendations/advice would be helpful.

The advisors will help you with this. They will also point out opportunities for getting credit at local community colleges during breaks/summers to supplement the hours. My ChemEngr son’s advisor is pretty strict and doesn’t want them to go over 14-15 hours per semester for Freshman year.

For Architecture, the advisors would only allow 13 hours that first freshman semester.

If you want to finish in 4 like myself, you’d pretty much need to take summer courses to keep your grades decent. I plan to have anywhere from 19-22 hours from my community college from summers and winter minimesters.

I wouldn’t go over 15.

I’m a sophomore Aerospace Engineering major and I can tell you that I would not be comfortable taking anymore than 10-11 hours of engineering classes per semester. For your first semester I would recommend taking the physics class, calc class, engr 111 class, and then either chem 107 or just an elective. That would put you at 13 or 14 total hours.

My son is a junior ASEN major. He’s taken 15 hours each semester with his current semester being the first time I think he’s felt a bit overloaded. I believe a lot depends on the type of classes you’re taking - whether it’s CBK’s or ASEN courses and how many other outside activies you’re involved in.
