How many credits does a normal student take in a year?

Colleges using the common semester hour system typically require 120 or 128 credits to graduate. This means that a student needs to take 15 or 16 credits per semester (30 or 32 per year) to graduate in eight semesters, assuming no AP or college credit coming in.

Note that this is higher than the 12 credit per semester minimum to be considered “full time” for financial aid purposes.

At less selective schools and schools with a lot of part time enrollment, the average course load may be significantly lower than 15 or 16 credits per semester, resulting in low four year graduation rates.

With a single major, you’ll do between 30-34 a year (15-17 a semester). However, with a double major you can do up to 38 per year, and you can also do as many summer classes and winter courses as your heart desires. You can take as many as you feel is necessary.
