Hey CC :)
I hope you guys can help me on this.

When should I start getting my SOP ready? And when should I start writing essays?
Also, how many essays are needed to be written for each university?

Thanks :)

Each college has its own requirements. Some ask for 0 essays. Some for 2. Some ask for short answers to supplemental questions. Since none of us live in your head and know the colleges you’re targeting, it’s best YOU go to the colleges’ own webpages and devote some time to familiarize yourself with what essay/testing/application requirements each has.

So basically I need to go to each college I’m applying to and ask them individually?

Yes.

Each college website should detail their requirements.

You can also create common app profile and find the supplements for some colleges (others lock down). Many state universities are not part of the commonapp and so you will need to visit those sites to find their requirements.

I think the essay prompts will be changing for 2014 admissions in commonapp.

The common app essay prompts are available now. So if you’re inclined, you can start brainstorming now.

You don’t need an account to download supplemental applications from the Common App website -
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/SupplementInfo.aspx

However, much of what is there now is last year’s. Many schools have not posted next year’s supplemental application yet. Here is what the website says.

You are wise to get a head start :-)

Theoretically, most colleges don’t change their supplements. Some do go for an overhaul in a given year but most are static.

There are also some supplements that are not accessible without creating an account.

So this is one common essay, for most colleges. but some colleges will have a supplementary or a different essay. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

There is the common app essay. Then, lots of colleges will have a supplemental essay. Also, lots of scholarships require yet another essay. Lastly, not all colleges participate in the common app.

Thank you! That clears things up.
