Man are you serious? You turned down a full ride at Duke for UChic...I think I'm gonna shoot someone. Give me your aid $$ PLEASE...I'm going to UMich cause I can't afford Duke hah.

I absolutely, positively believe that Uchicago offers a better undergraduate education than Duke. However, I chose Duke for a number of reasons. 1) Atmosphere- Chicago is full of intellectuals, many of whom seem to love to flaunt their aptitude. 2) My intentions weren't very aligned with the ones at Chicago. I was going to college to get a job, and Duke's job prospects are probably a slight notch above chicago's (the two are very close). And 3) Duke offered more aid. I honestly have no clue how there was such a discrepancy between your Duke and Chicago aid. The biggest difference I have between two schools is around 16k in grant money per year, and that's with duke and emory. Chicago's aid shouldn't be as good as duke's, so... your situation seems really really weird.

Dean Guttentag (Duke's dean of admissions) revealed stats to the school paper last year, Duke and Penn's cross admit ranges from 40-55% over 3 years (favoring Penn slightly) and gets more than 70% against any other school (including Chicago).

thethoughtprocess - is there any way you could post a link to that information? Do you remember the headline of the article? I searched the Chronicle website but didn't get anything.

I posted it somewhere in the NU thread, and those kids got all p/o, trying to think I made the stat up or something. Oh well, haters will hate.

This is certainly turning out to be a fun thread!

I turned down Duke for Rice. After much consideration and hours spent sweat out my decision, I come to the conclusion that Rice was a better fit for me. I wish the best to the person who comes off Duke's waiting list because of my choice.

My son turned down Duke for Williams. It was not an easy choice.

For the "Duke still step below top schools" article, I was just thinking that some Ivy League snobs are probably thinking before clicking on the article, "Hmmm.. yes, Duke is still a step below Dartmouth and Penn. I rather agree", then they click on the article and think.. "Oh right, HYPSM. :(. We live for Duke being inferior to ALL IVIES, lol!!"

Agh, you all are making us waitlistees salivate. I would totally love to go to Duke.

The p-frosh I hosted is most likely turning down Duke for WashU because he got a full tuition scholarship there.

My d turned down Duke for Brown

I'm turning down Duke for Dartmouth

My S is turning down Duke for USC Film School w/Trustee Scholarship. Duke is an amazing school, but his heart is with SC.

I think Duke and Dartmouth are very similar in a lot of ways. I would have picked Dartmouth first, though, in a heartbeat (academically and in terms of personal fit). I'm not crazy about Dartmouth, but I think it is one of the very best schools in the country.

unregistered: For Duke vs. Dartmouth, when you say Dartmouth is better academically, what exactly do you mean?

a.) In terms of your personal academic fit
OR
b.) Overall academic quality

I think I'm going to turn down Duke for Pomona. Haven't sent in the forms yet though.

Stanford....

Wow, people are turning down Duke for so many crappier schools.
jk of course
