Hi! Im applying to all the following schools regular decision. How many do you think I have a good chance of getting into?
American University
Florida University
Florida State University
College of William and Mary
Georgetown
Tufts
Columbia
Dartmouth
Brown
Cornell
Harvard (why not)
4.0 4.5 GPA
34 ACT
770 780 Subject Tests (Lit and US History)
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Commended Scholar
Intern at Democratic Party
Volunteer, Judical Campaign
President, Lead Delegate, MUN
President, Polysci Club
President and Founder, History Honor Society
You’ll probably get into your first four. You also have good chances at Tufts and Georgetown (I believe). Out of the rest, you may get into one or two. The thing is that many kids have clubs on their resumes and, on top of that, have great ECs. Although you do have some polisci ECs, they aren’t very unique–nothing will separate you from the other countless 4.0 GPAs and 34 ACTs (of which I am one haha).
It does show initiative, but 2 of my good friends have also had internships with political parties. Also, saying that you have an internship with the Democraric Party is quite vague; what exactly do you mean by that?
Internship with the Florida Democratic Party and Coordinated Campaign, Director of all voter activities in two congressional districts, staging director @ap012199
Ah, that seems much more impressive than what you stated above. That’ll be a good addition to your app. But, again, many applicants will have impressive internships (and even jobs) that match the caliber of yours. Writing great essays will be your way into these selective universities.
Thanks! My essay will either be about having a single mom and being the man of the house and how that has made me an adult, a funny one about being the only democrat in my school’s political science one (rumors I was a communist, supported Stalin, all sorts of crazy stuff), working to elect the first African American judge in our county, or about being a youth leader and dealing with kids’ issues like family suicides, drug addiction, alcoholism, etc. Which of those do you think is best? @ap012199
You have nice stats and ECs but I think your list is very reach-heavy. Unless you’re from Virginia, I think everything beyond the first three are reaches. You have a shot at all of them, but presumably you understand the odds are long. Are the top three schools you can afford and would be happy to attend?
Applying ED would definitely help show interest and minimally increase your chances, but you can’t say anything for sure when talking about Ivies. I think it’s definitely worth an application.
I hear that, but I’m worried about the finances. I can’t be committed to one of the most expensive schools in the country if I don’t know it will be affordable. @ap012199
