Chance me for everywhere from Columbia to Tufts to BU

Due to my somewhat unusual application, which you are hopefully going to read about it in a second, I'm going to try to apply to a bunch of schools and see what sticks. Planning to study Political Science. Here they are:

Columbia (ED)
U of Chicago
Brown University
Tufts
Georgetown
NYU
Boston College
Boston University
University of Florida

Alright so here we go with the app! I am a rising senior by the way.

Me/Hooks
Rising senior
Pretty good Florida public school (this year, 5-10 students went to Ivies and such)
Hispanic (Dominican-American)
Low-income
First-generation college student

I lived in the Dominican Republic from second grade to seventh. Hopefully this makes me somewhat different as I plan to stress it in my app.

SAT
SAT I: 2330 (770 CR, 780 M, 780 W)
SAT II: Am going to take Math I, Lit, and American History at the beginning of next year.

The SAT is the strongest part of my application. Took it twice. I am confident going into the SAT II's.

GPA
Fresh/Soph: 3.18 UW/3.88 W
Junior: 4.00 UW/ 5.00 W
Overall (approx.): 3.4/4.5

Quite frankly, I was lazy as a freshman and sophomore. This is the glaring hole in my app. I will address it, and although I won't have a good reason why I was lazy, I will have a very good explanation on what motivated me to change.

AP's
European History: 5
US History: 5
Psychology: 5
Spanish Lit.: 3
English Lit.:
US Gov. & Poli.:
Physics:
Calc AB:
Statistics:

The ones without a score are part of my senior schedule.

Extracurriculars
-President of STAND chapter senior year, member junior year
A national anti-genocide club. I am going to STAND camp at the end of this month. Something I'm pretty passionate about.

-Some other clubs I was a member of. Some community service hours. Nothing worth wasting your time on.

EC's another weak part of my app.

Essays/Recs
I won't bore you with because everyone says there's will be great. I do think that perhaps my essay is more important to my app than other's are to theirs because of the aforementioned. I will bust my ass on it.

Please don't hesitate to tell me that I don't have a chance at the Ivies+ with that GPA and without any outstanding EC's. Please don't hesitate to tell me I'll get in anywhere I want because of the hooks and SAT scores, and that the whole turning it around junior year thing helps a lot. Haha, point is, please tell me what you're thinking.

Thanks for reading and any feedback is much appreciated.

ECs and gpa are clear weaknesses. URM and good SATs will take you far, but w/o solid ECs and Academics, you can’t be sure. BU and U o F are safeties. You do show an upward trend which may offset a little. The rest are tough b/c URM does confer a lot of advantage, however lack of ECs neutralizes it.

Thanks! Good to hear UF is a safety.

Bump, bump, bumpity bump.

Bump, bump, bumpity bump.

What does a man have to do go to a reply around here!?

The lack of substantive ECs is a problem. What are you doing this summer? From your description, one camp. Are you working?

I’m a Poli Sci major too and having EC’s are important to have dude

I’ve worked on and off all throughout HS, but due to never actually being on payroll (I worked with family/family friends at supermarkets/grocery stores “under the table”), I don’t think I’ll be able to put any of it on a college app.

Bump, bump, bump it up!

Columbia (ED)- reach
U of Chicago-match
Brown University-Reach (EC’s)
Tufts- low reach, you have the grades
Georgetown-low reach
NYU-match
Boston College-MAtch
Boston University-Match
University of Florida-Safety
Try to do something in the fall

Try to raise your GPA as much as possible and try to get 4s and 5s on your AP tests. You have a really amazing SAT score and your URM/low income status will be an additional bonus to your applications – but they won’t be your shoo-in to these schools.

You look a bit like a borderline applicant to the big name schools; the lack of ECs and low GPA are hard to justify against the SAT and the URM status. There are URMs who apply to schools with 4.0s and every great EC imaginable – and at many of these schools, you WILL be competing against them in the application process. The fact of the matter is, no school will choose you based on your URM status alone. You need the stats to back it up.

Columbia (ED) - rejection
U of Chicago - rejection
Brown University - rejection
Tufts - possible acceptance
Georgetown - possible acceptance
NYU - possible acceptance
Boston College - possible acceptance
Boston University - acceptance
University of Florida - acceptance

I think you should try to raise the GPA and consider a few of these schools:
UVA
Michigan
UNC
Lehigh
Case Western
UT Austin
George Washington
American U
Tulane
Minnesota
Maryland
Rutgers

Thanks both of you! I’ll take a look at those schools, but I’m trying to go to the northeast in/around/close to a big city. Those can be negotiable though, I appreciate you taking the time to make that list for me.

George Washington is a great school for poli sci and is easier than georgetown to get into. See if you can get a job as an intern in your town govt or state. for poli sci try to go to dc. Colleges like to see gpa growth so the 3.4 may not look that terrible. Hispanic also helps but ec’s aren’t your strong points at the moment. I say you are a reach at the ivies and georgetown, but have a shot. U of F is in as is BU, GW is a place you really should try.

Rutgers, GW and American are all in the NE area and in/near big cities. Lehigh not too far from the city.

Yeah, I know, I didn’t mean to apply that to the whole list.

Anymore opinions?

Let’s give this one last bump.

This is a few weeks old, but I wouldn’t mind some more opinions. =)

Shameless bump.

I don’t see how working “under the table” versus being an “official” employee would make a difference. If I were you, I’d include the work experience on my app for sure.
