I'm going to an out of state school, because I feel this school offers a better program than my in state school. How did you adjust to living far away and what was your exprience like? It seems odd that my good friends will be a state away.

~Thanks!

CF:

I went from Anchorage to Boston for college (pre-internet), and it was great. You may find, like I did, that you like being out of constant touch with family and old friends.

I only got home for Christmas freshman year -- I'm sure you'll get back more than that -- and I got completely into my classes, my new friendships, exploring my new environment, and controlling my own schedule. I think it helped my relationship with my parents to limit contact to weekly phone calls -- we broke a lot of bad habits that first year.

Your mileage will vary, of course. My sisters were in Boston then too, so I was only apart from my folks, and when you go to high school in Alaska, you take for granted that you're going a long, long way away for college, so maybe we were more prepared psychologically.

Anyway, I'm a huge advocate of going out of state for college, and I've gently suggested to the kids that they'd better have a good reason if they want to stay local when the time comes. ;)
