Ok, so it is 8:30AM, and I keep going through my lists upon lists to see what may have been "missed". Quite frankly, I think my DD needs much more space than her closet provides! She thinks she needs clothes for goodness knows how many years! So my question is.....how many pairs of jeans did your DD take? If I just count jean pants there must be about 9, plus the denim shorts, denim skirts, and capris......

Now, from the northeastern perspective, looking at the "south", will she really need so many jeans? But my DD does not need to "worry", there are sundresses, nice pants, nice capris, nice dresses plus plus plus!

My question is, are they going to study or have a fashion show? I don't know about your kids, but can yours do laundry welll - or at all?

I look at this thread as a place to have some humor about our packing and moving ins!

Share your experiences, maybe we can have a laugh!

LOL - I can't believe how much my d took with her and how she managed to fit it in her dorm room!
My d only took about 3 pairs of jeans, but she often wears capris or sweats instead. I think she took about 12 pairs of flip flops, but ended up wearing the same ones over and over anyway.
I tried to teach my daughter to do laundry before she left but she wasn't that interested. I think the main thing is to teach them to read the labels!!
Nothing like washing an item that says "dry clean only" LOL
Mine did call me a few times when she was doing laundry to ask a question, but did seem to manage pretty well.
It's amazing how much stuff they can cram into the dorm room though!
Good luck with the rest of packing and your first move-in!!
In case you didn't catch Eadad's post about the giant zip-loc bags, all I can say is YESSS, give them a try. We actually were able to re-use the ones from last year too, and they do make packing much easier. They are amzingly strong, too!

It is Wednesday and my daughter moves in Friday. She has yet to pack a single piece of clothing. I believe she has three pairs of jeans and numerous shorts. The first month or so of school she will need to wear shorts on account of the weather. We live in Columbia so that explains her nonchalance about packing. I think she believes dorm life will be an extension of high school life. She has already been two years away at a residential high school so all the charm of room decorating is lost for her.
Definitely pack flip flops or slippers as I call them. Students here seem pretty casual going to class although the girls seem to get dressier when going out especially if they are in a sorority. Weather has been doggone hot lately--especially by late afternoon.
Good luck with the packing. After two years of living away from home my daughter remarked how she didn't need half the stuff she packed or bought for her room. You can always buy later after you decide what you need and you don't need everything on the first day. However if you are an OOS person then that may not apply so much to y'all.

can't answer the girlie q's as I have a son
he's a northerner and lived in shorts most of the year, and wore hoodies when his southern friends were wearing winter weight coats, they were "cold" while he thought it was merely autumnlike. One morning they delayed the start of classes a couple of hours b/c of an "ice condition".he thought that was hysterical.
He wore his flip flops most of the year too.
I taught him to do laundry in a commercial laundromat using actual quarters,so he could get used to the large loads, heat of the dryers, etc.USC laundry rooms use the Carolina Card sp quarters arent needed. .. He probably averaged 3X a semester (Sunday's a big laundry day) and brought home duffels full of dirty clothes both winter break and for the summer. Girls probably do laundry more often.

Our D hasn't quite yet figured out the move is tomorrow. I do second the recommendation of those Ziploc bags (the very large ones). Now if we can only take her shoes out to flatten it, we'll be able to travel tomorrow. See you all there!

Cathymee, Your post about the electronics brought a big smile! My son is the same way. He's carefully packed computer, various cords, video stuff that I don't even know what it is, etc. etc. His clothes? Still in the closet! He's pretty good at laundry, but we're having a short lesson on ironing tonight. (I bet he'll forget that before he ever puts it to use.) LOL!!!

DD is in Patterson - said the tv connections will not work for about two weeks...? She did hook up her dvd so they were able to watch movies. OMG
thanks for the 3mm tape recomendation it really came in handy.

The dorm closets were really layout well. We got those multiple slack hanging hangers and she "fit" all of her jeans! I am afraid her dresses are going to get really wrinkled though because everything was so tight!
