How many people nationwide take the SAT and PSAT per year? Close to one million?

About a million and a half took the SAT in the 2006 run of tests, according to Collegeboard. (If you want more detailed info, I suggest checking out the 'For Counselors' section of their site -- there are some interesting statistics there.)

College Board does not actually publish total number of test takers per year. What it does publish annually is total number of the high graduating class in particular year who took the SAT. In other words its 2006 numbers are for those who were to graduate from high school in 2006, which is close to 1.5 million test-takers, but that counts tests taken from sophomore to senior year for that class, and most take the test toward end of junior year or beginning of senior year. The actual number that take the test annually is likely somewhat higher.

N=1,376,745 for the number of distinct test-takers in high school class of 2006.

"Of the graduating high school class of 2006, there were 1,206,455 students who took the ACT"

From wikipedia. I thought the number of ACT takers is significantly lower.
