How many reach, safety, and match schools should I apply to?

My mom said 10 total, but is that not enough?

And if so, how many do you think? And how many of each category should I choose?

An average of 3 reaches, 3 matches, and 3 safeties. However, if you’re a very strong student, and plan to apply to top colleges, then around 6 reaches, 3 matches, and 2 safeties.

I have a 3.8 unweighted, 4.1/4.2 weighted GPA.

For my daughter we used a 5-tier scale

Reach – Scores and grades are ‘average’ at best plus <15% overall acceptance rate

High Match – Scores and grades are at least average, but <25% overall acceptance rate

Match – Scores and grades are a bit above average + and overall acceptance rate >33%

Low Match – Scores and grades are significantly above average – should get in, but there is a history of strange decisions from time to time

Safety – Scores and grades significantly above average, and heavily recruited – history of Merit Scholarships, and there’s a good chance she’d get one.

D was hoping for Top-15 school and applied to 10 total – 2 Reach, 4 High Match, 2 Match, 1 Low Match and 1 Safety. If you’re looking at a lower tier of school, you probably need fewer apps.
