How many recommendation letters do I need from Harvard?

If I need multiple recommendations, do they have to be from different field (such as one from math/science teacher and another from English/history)?

Thank you.

The recommendation is that you get one teacher writing from the humanities and one from either math or a science. A few of my friends did extremely well with college admissions with two recommendations from humanities teachers, so while it’s STRONGLY encouraged that you get one English/social studies/language and one math/science, it’s not the end of the world if you can’t.

at least 14, for sure.

If you can’t find a way to get an additional recommendation from Barack Obama then you’re in deep trouble mister :(

I disagree with WishyWashy here. Nowhere on Harvard’s admissions website or literature does it say that anything like this. All I know is that it’s usually better to get teachers from two different subjects, not fields.

For example, I’m going to be study Economics/Government at Harvard next year. I had two recs from humanities teachers: History and English

If you were to be a biochemical engineer or a math major or something, I think it would make your application stronger if you had two recs from a math teacher and a science teacher.

I’m going to agree with Ace, I don’t think it’s “STRONGLY” encouraged in the least. I think Harvard wants to see recommendations from the teachers that know you best, and as long as they’re in academic subjects (i.e., not gym or health) then you’re fine. I had a rec from an English teacher and one from a Spanish teacher, and was applying as a comparative lit major, so I think it fit perfectly. My math/science teachers would have had very little interesting to say about me, as I’m just an average student in their classes (and Harvard knew that when they admitted me).

Thanks, guys! I’ll ask my English and history teachers to write my recommendations.

Glad to help!
