How many S/NC (pass/fail) classes is too much, honestly?

I’ve taken 1 mandatory S/NC english class freshman year, and another one fall semester sophomore year. I’m currently a sophomore spring semester student. None of these classes are in my major (and I never will), and t I am potentially applied math-econ. That said, at what number of S/NC classes does it become harmful for finance internships and grad school. Many finance internships ask for transcripts, and I don’t want them to think, “jeez, this guy has taken 3 pass/fail classes, we don’t think he is a good candidate, or no wonder his GPA is so high–he’s just padding it”.

I don’t really see anyone having an issue with one a semester, as long as it’s more of an elective class. That’s been my general plan, at least, and I know many do the same and haven’t had issues.

For those kind of jobs, that is worth investigating. Surely Brown has many students who go to such jobs and some experience with that. Talk to the career center or professors rather to people online. My daughter went to grad school in CS but I don’t know of more than 4 s/nc, one mandatory in fiction writing, 3 in foreign languages.

^Will 3, maximum pass/fail hurt me in the future? For grad school or employment?

No, of course not.

I always wonder how many s/nc classes brown graduates end up taking. I wonder if there is a stat for this anywhere. Especially because S/nc classes are so easy to take here.

if there are stats for it

The closest thing I can find is that in a given year, almost 20% of the grades awarded are “S.” (<a href=“Office of Institutional Research | Brown University”>Office of Institutional Research | Brown University) and that according to the senior survey (Error - The Brown Daily Herald) the majority of Brown students take 2-4 non mandatory S/NC classes in their 4 years.
