Hey all. I am a current high school junior interested in Carnegie Mellon for SCS or CIT. I was wondering... can you apply to both schools Early Decision? Or is ED limited to only 1 school?

One. [CMU Application Plans](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University)

I don’t know how you’re supposed to handle this on the CMU supplemental essay, though. If you’re deferred to RD, you can apply to more schools, but if you have geared your essay toward the one school that you applied to for ED, I’m interested to know how you go about expanding that list (and justifying the expansion to include other schools) for the RD application process.

I’m a CMU freshman, so I remember going through this last fall. What I would do is write your application essay like you wanted to double major (talk about your interest in CS and Engineering), then do your ED to SCS/CIT (whichever you want more) and if you aren’t accepted, apply RD to the other.

But what about if you get into a school under ED but want to RD another school or two? Like I got into H&SS, but want to RD Tepper. I put it as my second choice but it said Cancel on my online account. I’m under the impression that it gets pushed to RD, is that true?

You do not apply RD to any other schools if you are accepted to the one school you applied to for ED. If you are accepted ED, you are done with the application process. (You can work on changing majors/schools later if you decide to, after you are a student).

If you are deferred to RD, then you can apply to more than one school during the RD process.

If you are denied acceptance to the one school that you applied to for ED, then you can apply to the other schools you’re interested in during the RD process.
