Pre Calculus =/= trig. Pre Calc is pretty much an extension of Alg II.

we have classes on functions and limit-continuity from grade 9 onwards.

and by series and sequences do you mean AP, GP, HP, AGP and stuff?

Precalc is kind of an introduction to calculus and is supplemented with trigonometry.

so what specifically is āintroduction to calculusā?

sorry but i had googled it out already just after posting the above comment.

Iām taking AP Calc BC this year (as a junior) and then next year Iāll be taking Number Theory/Discrete Mathematics and another math class (I donāt know what it will be yet because all interested students vote at the end of the year, but probably multivariable). This is just the top honors track at my school (there is regular, middle honors, and top honors). This year there are 10 of us and next year I know of at least one person who is dropping math entirely, so 9 or less people.

10th: pre cal
11th: calc
12th: multivariablecalc

My entire calc bc class is made up of juniors (me included) and sophomores (about 2 to 3 seniors), about 2/3 are juniors, 1/4 are sophs and the rest are seniors

I took Calc and Precalc in 10th, but I didnāt take BC in 11th due to catching mononucleosis. Iām taking stats instead this year.

Old thread is old.

I go to an average low-performing high school in the middle of nowhere. Honors kids take calculus (we donāt have AP Calculus AB or BC, just regular), but in the grand scheme of things most people donāt.

(Obviously, people on here saying what they took is not going to be remotely representativeā¦the kind of people who are inclined to use this site are a lot more likely to take calculus.)

My BC Calc class of 15 people has 8 seniors, 6 juniors, and 1 sophomore (me lol)

My BC class last year was fun. So I was like the only person going to school who tested out of math, and the most advanced math in our school is BC in senior year. So I was the only freshman in a class with 13 seniors. Needless to say, I got the highest grade. :D

AP Calculus BC is not offered at our school and dual-enrollment for math is unheard of. We are not a math-heavy school.

I agree with smcnair21 there are a lot of kids who may never take it and wonāt need to based on their intended majors. Engineers obviously should seek the most challenging math path but many majors will never require it. Kudos if you want to go that route but for some students/majors their time may be better spent in a class better preparing them for their major. There is a girl in my childās class who is applying to a highly ranked school for business and she has taken no business classes and she was dumbfounded on a campus visit when they asked why she wants to go into business with all her science and math classes. She was actually insulted. High school is about preparing for college.

math track
6th grade
algebra 1 + geometry
7th grade
algebra 2 + precalc
8th grade
discrete math + calc ab
9th grade
calc bc + stats
10th grade
differential equations
11+12 grade
take course at university.
about 2-3 people in my county take this schedule annually.

I take Acc, pre calc/Calc Ab in 10th, Calc BC in 11th, HL math in 12th

My school has ~1500 kids. Students can take AP Calculus AB after precalc OR they can take precalc and a course called āintro to calculusā and then take AP Calc BC because intro to calc is a prereq for BC at my school (precalc and intro to calc would be taken the same year. Precalc would be taken first 2 trimesters and intro to calc is a one trimester class taken third trimester.) this is the general math progression
Average student
9th: Algebra I
10th: Geometry
11th: Algebra II
12th: Business math (Most donāt even consider this a legit class) OR Precalculus
Average āacceleratedā student
8th: Algebra I
9th: Geometry
10th: Algebra II
11th: Precalculus and possibly intro to calc
12th: AP Calc AB or BC
The really accelerated students (~3%) do this
7th: Algebra I
8th: Geometry (Algebra I if they double up freshman year)
9th: Algebra II (+ Geometry if they took alg 1 in 8th and want to double up)
10th: Precalculus with possibly intro to calc
11th: AP Calc AB or BC
12th: Either AP Stats, Calc 3 + DE if they took BC or Calc 2 + Calc 3 if they took AB
I kinda did something different. I just finished soph. year and this is what I have done/am planning to do
8th: Algebra I
9th: Geometry
Summer between 9th and 10th: Algebra II
10th: Precalc during first 2 trimesters. I taught myself Calc 1 while still in precalc and passed the calc 1 CLEP. Because of this, I was allowed to join the calc BC class for third trimester, since they had just finished calc 1 material and were moving into the calc 2 stuff.
Summer between 10th and 11th: Combined course in Differential Equations and Linear Algebra via a distant learning program (itāll only count for DE at the university Iām dual enrolling at)
11th: Signed up for Calc 3 and Partial Differential Equations for Fall semester and Iāll take an intro to proofs class during the spring semester, hopefully
12th: Planning on taking 2 math classes per semester. Fall semester would be Real Analysis 1 and Linear Algebra (should be easy since Iām learning most of the stuff right now). Spring Semester would be Real Analysis 2 and Complex Analysis
My track is by no means normal, though. My Calc BC teacher said Iāll graduate with more math classes than anybody else in my schoolās history, so at least at my school itās obviously extremely rare.
