Do we really have to continue to bc…I was thinking of switching to ap stats

I took AB as a sophomore.

Took geometry as a freshman, currently in trig/alg2 as a sophomore. Could take AP Calc BC next year as a junior, but my school prevents any non-seniors from taking any actual calc, so I’ll be in AP stats next year.

Kind of dumb, but oh well.

you guys are lucky that you can actually choose to study calculus. here in india, we have no option. its like, you HAVE to take up calculus.

I have taken: Geometry (9th grade), Algebra 2 Honors (10th grade), and Precalculus (11thy grade); However, this year (12th grade), I decided to take AP Statistics instead of calculus.

Will colleges look down on me for that?

nope. itll be fine. just relax.

Oh hello again akashadip! :)

Thank you. I was a little worried but hoped taking an AP course would look better than regular calculus especially since I want to major in psych (statistics is very important in that field).

yeah right. anyway best of luck to you.

I’ll be taking AP calc BC as a junior next year. Most people take it senior year; there are only three people at my school right now who are double-advanced or more in math. I’m looking at math/science and political science.

Statistics is actually VERY useful class for students not interested in the sciences, and it’s sad that kids are pressured to take calculus when they aren’t all going to be scientists or mathematicians.

In my country we start calculus in 10th grade. We cover the material slightly up to Calc BC.

I’m in AP calculus AB in freshman year ;)

We take a placement test in 6th grade and then get put into one of three tracks:

Regular track:
7th grade math (7th - don’t know the name), pre-algebra (8th), algebra I (9th), geometry (10th), algebra II (11th), pre-cal (12th)

One year ahead track: see above track; get rid of 7th grade math and move everything above down a year. Once you finish pre-cal junior year, you can take Calc AB, Calc BC, and/or Stat AP (this is the track I was placed into; I’m taking Calc BC and Stat AP).

Two year ahead track: get rid of 7th grade math and pre-algebra in the first track and move everything else down two years. After finishing pre-cal sophomore year, you can take Calc AB, Calc BC, Stat AP, and/or multi-variable.

And then we always have a few exceptions to the rule, like the 8th grader and sophomore in my Calc BC class, the sophomore in multi-variable, and a guy in my grade (12th) who has taken math at a college (and a good college at that) for most of high school.

I find it funny how in my school there are no exception to the rule kids for math. Everyone seemingly has to follow the pre-prescribed order. Maybe no one smart enough has come along to beat the system… but there are a lot of smart kids o.O.

My school has the normal one and two year honors courses. I was on the one year honors, but took precalculus over the summer to get back on two year honors.

what do you guys actually mean by precalculus??!!
the only thing i know is calculus. never heard of anything as "pre"calculus!!!

precal is another name for trig.
At my school there are no math classes above calculus but there is also no way to be taking anything harder than geometry as a freshmen because all of the middle school will only go as high as algebra 1

precalculus is trigonometry!!!
well then here we have to take trig from grade 8.

Taking AP Calc AB this year (sophomore)

Precalculus isn’t really the same as trig, considering I had a class called Precalculus and Trigonometry. Precalc is mostly Alg II concepts, but reformulated to prepare for Calculus. So for example, we did limits in a lot more detail, sequences and series, functions, and so on.
