I am guessing some depend on the school, but if I send in my mother's W-2, and maybe a copy of her application for tax return (if she finishes on time), will that be okay? I see schools listing off possible tax documents to send, and I assume that is either/or, not "send all of these,' right?

Pretty sure you need to send all attachments to both your parnents’ and your signed federal tax returns.

I don’t really get what “all attachments” mean.

Also, my mother is the custodial parent … and I haven’t seen my father in like 7 years.

You must submit a signed copy of every tax form that was submitted to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). If in doubt, send it anyways. The worst that will happen is that the school will receive some pages they do not need, in which case they will just send the unnecessary pages to the shredder.

It’s just I’m not sure how many financial documents I have to actively procure though – just the ones my mother sends to the IRS?

Is this for UVA?? (I just finished reading one of your other posts).

I’m pretty sure that you have to submit both the custodial and non-custodial parent’s tax documents as well as your own (if you did not file, make sure you submit their student non-tax filer statement.

Since one of the questions on their financial aid form asks the non-custodial parent how much they plan on contributing to college expenses in addition to chid support, there is a chance that they do not require the non-custodial parent’s tax info. Your best bet is to call UVA on Monday morning and ask.

As far as the documents you need to send from your mother:
- 1040, 1040A OR 1040EZ (whichever one she used)
- W-2 forms from her employers
- If she filed a 1040, some other common forms she may also have filed schedule A (itemized deductions), schedule B (interest and dividends), schedule D (if she sold any stock), schedule C or CEZ (if self employed), form 2441 (if she had dependents in child care), form 8901 (child tax credit for children under age 18), and if her income is very low possible form 8812 (additional child care tax credit)

However, she may very well have just filed a 1040EZ and none of the other schedules - you need to check with her. Remember, if you filed you also have to send your 1040 EZ (my guess of what you filed) and your w-2.

And remember, UVA does not want you to send state tax forms.

Yes, it’s for UVA.

The problem is that I don’t even know where the non-custodial parent lives – he abandoned the family 7 years ago so it’s not like he’s actually a parent; all he does is pay child support because the court orders him too (which of course expires this year).

My mother only started working January 2007 (before that we had no income after the divorce, except for a brief year of work in 2003, before she was retrenched again) and my non-custodial parent will not pay anything for school (he also has a court order mandating that any contact with him and my mother’s children must be supervised).

This is the first time working in the country, so just like me filing for financial aid, she is having trouble with the whole tax filing process as a whole.

I have the W-2, however – can I just send that first and send an explanatory letter?

Contact UVA’s financial aid office and discuss this situation with them. They’ll help you.

Are you saying your mother did not file her federal taxes yet? Does that mean that you didn’t fill out the FASFA yet? Or did you just fill out an estimated “will file” FASFA?

My taxes are pretty complicated, so I always do them on my own, and have never used Turbo Tax online free federal filing. However, I have heard that it is pretty easy and walks you through everything. Based on what you have said, I am assuming that your mother’s tax return would not be terribly complicated, and if she has not made an appointment to get her taxes done, maybe you could help her do it online. If you do, you can just print the copy and send it with a copy of your mother’s w-2.

I just tried starting it using bogus info and it does seem very easy. ANy advice from anyone who has used it??

You still need to contact UVA’s financial aid office to find out what to do about your father. From what I’ve read in other posts this can sometimes be a problem. You may need to get supporting info from a 3rd party (guidance counselor?) stating that they are aware that you do not know the whereabouts of your father. Tell UVA everything you’ve told us.

Congratulations on your acceptance and good luck

Yeah, I filed the FAFSA with a “will file” return.

Noted. Thanks to you both! It’s the week-end, but I’ll follow up on this on Monday.
