I've taken the SAT twice, got a 1900 and then a 1910. I plan on taking it once more in October. Is taking it a third time one too many? How about a 4th (November)? Can colleges (UC's) see it and, if so, is it frowned upon?

I’d take it a third time, & try the ACT once.

Don’t take a 3rd time, unless you study beforehand. Check with the school regarding scores. Some allow you to send 3 highest individual SAT scores (CR, M, essay), even if taken on different dates. I don’t recommend taking a 4th. If you are able, you may want to see about taking a prep class. If not, there are a lot of recommendations on CC regarding best study guides. And you may want to try ACT, but again, study first.

Almost all colleges will “superscore” SAT (some even the ACT), so taking it again can not hurt you, only help you. The only negative to you is giving up a Saturday morning and the examination fee.

The problem is that a lot of people plateau-out. It’s not unusual to see a 100-200 point jump between take 1 and take 2, but after that you’re likely to get diminishing returns. The ACT might be a better choice if you’ve found your SAT scores that stagnant.

Only take it a third time if you feel that you’ve prepared enough to make it worth it. If you just want to take it a third time to “see if you’ll do better”, then don’t retake it. Study enough so that you know you can (and will) do better than your previous attempts. You can maybe try the ACT too.

Both of my D’s had a big jump from second to third time taking SAT.

I think you should definitely take it a third time. Even if you havn’t studied or tutored a ton. Sorry but I personally believe that those tests are really about getting used to them. I had a similar experience only with the ACT. I got a 25 then a 26…the third time was the free state wide one that I didn’t realize I had to take and so I took two aCTS in june…I ended up with a 30. I truly think that its about practice. Im not saying dont study because you should, but I would not argue taking it again.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I’m definitely gonna take it again, and study!
