Number of times to take SAT & ACT

I was just wondering if taking the SAT 3 times sounds fine? I took it twice and I’m planning on taking it once more in the fall depending on my scores. Also I took the ACT once in June and got a 29 but I’m planning on taking it in the fall also. Would this be too much? Thanks for the help in advance!

That depends on what colleges you want to get into, what your SAT scores have been, whether you think you can substantially improve (hard to know, of course) and how much it matters to you versus the opportunity cost of not doing something else with your time. Perhaps you could elaborate more…I take it you’re going to be a senior?

Three times is fine. Even four times is fine. There are some “urban legends” that it’s somehow bad to take it more than thrice, but they’re false, ime.

I agree that 3 or 4 times is fine.

Keep in mind that 99% of colleges won’t even know how many times you’ve taken the test. There are currently only 21 schools that want to see all SAT/ACT scores, or some variation thereof. All the other colleges will take your best sitting from either test, or your superscore from either test, or they don’t require test scores at all.

Thus, taking the SAT and/or ACT multiple times is not so much an issue of “looking bad” to colleges (with the exception of those 21 schools, or course) as it is a mental and emotional challenge for the test-taker. You can take each test as many times as you want, but most students don’t see much improvement after their 3rd or 4th tries, partially because they are only human, and prone to discouragement when their test scores start to plateau.

That being said, I have seen some very dedicated and determined students break through on their 5th or 6th tries…but it’s unlikely, and thus I don’t recommend it.

We were told 3 times so I think you are good.

Yes I’m going to be a senior in the fall. My first SAT I took in March 2016 and got a 1260. My second SAT I took in June and haven’t gotten the scores yet (I should be getting them in a few days). Would I be able to superscore for most colleges?

And even those 21 schools generally don’t bother to dig beneath the highest sections. They’re busy and rarely have any reason to investigate further.
