How many years of Spanish do I need to take in order to get into a top-50 school?

I am in 8th grade. I started Spanish in 2nd grade. I have been taking Spanish 1 since 6th grade. Spanish 1 is the highest level my middle school goes up. How many years does that count for? Do I need to take more? Be warned, I have a B in Spanish in 6th grade, and 7th grade, and so far on the border of a B+ and an A. I do have difficulty in Spanish. It is not my natural talent.

The question is what languages are offered in HS and what level you will attain. Frankly, as an 8th grader you should get off CC and just have fun learning. Find a language you do like.

Have you had THREE YEARS OF SPANISH 1!!!
IF so, this is silly.
Immediately go see your guidance counselor, point out you started Spanish in 2nd grade and are taking Spanish 1for the 1st time, so think it’s high time you take Spanish 2 now, so what online classes does the HS recommend? Try to find a Spanish online class to “verify” Level 2 for 8th grade (the good thing with online is that you can start in October), then decide if you continue with Spanish up to Level 4, or take another romance language (French, Italian) in high school. You’ll be expected to take up to level 4 or AP for a Top 50 university/LAC.

  1. Only high school level Spanish will count towards any college entry requirement. Check with your middle school to see if any of the coursework you took in middle school will show up on your HS transcript.
  2. The answer of how many classes are needed varies by college so look online at required/recommended classes for schools you are considering.

One of the schools my son applied to required three years of foreign language but recommended five years. He’s in Spanish V this year. You have time to take five years. You can google the “common data set” for each school you are interested in and find out what classes they want you to have. Most colleges want at least three years.

BTW Eighth grade Spanish I does count toward the total. At our school GPA starts when language class starts. He could have/should have started in sixth grade.
