Just one/two years of HS language?

Hi there!

As an 8th grader I walked across campus every day and took Honors spanish II with the high schoolers. Technically, its a year of HS language, but my guidance counselors say that's pushing it.

As a 9th grader I took Honors Spanish III.

As a tenth grader I didn't take any spanish class because otherwise I wouldn't be able to take AP art (its a passion of mine) later .... long story.

So, my dilemma is this: Can I get away with this? I want to go to a more prestigious school, but I wouldn't go into a linguistic/language field. Is it worth dropping architecture classes (a field I may possibly look into) to take up languages again as a junior/senior? If so, is it okay if I start German or another class instead of having to jump back into the high-level spanish?

I would take a language class. I’m a math/ science guy, with no intentions of ever using french again, but I was advised to get 3, they said 2 years was a little iffy, but definitely not only one, I’d take another year of Spanish.

Okay, thanks for the input. Any other advice?

I’d definitely take at least another year if I were you. Like runallday4 said, most colleges want at least 2 or 3 years of the same language. Check out some college websites for specific requirements or email some of the colleges that you’re considering and tell them your story and ask for their opinions.

I agree-- at least 3 years. And in one language looks better that to start up in German. Really prestegious colleges want about 4 now.
