How many people apply to med school and how many out of those get accepted?

Last year about 37,000 applied and about 17,000 matriculated (a more concrete number than acceptances due to things like deferments and such).

To put that in perspective, there were about 66000 people who took the MCAT in 2005, of which about 1/3 were repeat testers. You can see that there is a significant amount of attrition just from taking the MCAT to actually applying.

Is it true that if you apply to more than one med school and you have a good GPA, good ECs, and a good MCAT score you're bound to get into one?

If one has a good application, then one is very likely to get in. Yes.

Conversely, it's also true that a good application is defined as one that is likely to get you in.

So, yes, that's true, but only by tautology.

Also, what is more important a good GPA or a good MCAT score?

If you define good as "enough that it's not going to hurt you", then you need both. If "good" means, "Enough that it can help overcome other flaws in your application", then - by definition - all you need is one or the other.

The reason I'm giving unhelpful answers is because the questions you're asking are too vague to have reasonable answers to them.

You're being very helpful, bluedevilmike. By the way, should your major in college be one that is science-oriented or will any be fine? Are med schools going to care that the major you have chosen isn't as difficult as others?

"Is it true that if you apply to more than one med school and you have a good GPA, good ECs, and a good MCAT score you're bound to get into one?"

lol This is not true. If you apply to 2 med schools, you may not get into either. 10-20 schools is a reasonable number to apply to and assuming you have a competitive application, you should get into at least one.

Good GPA and MCAT to aim for are 3.5 and 30. You may be able to get away with less than those if other components of your app are especially strong.
