Okay being the procrastinator that I am I was surfing stats of ppl who got accepted/waitlisted/rejected for the schools I'm interested in, top places like Harvard/Yale/Stanford etc etc...and I started to notice that all the people who got in had consistent 4s and 5s on their AP tests. Many of them even had straight fives, for like 6 tests. :O
So my question is, if I screwed up one test badly and got a 3, is that going to hurt my chances for getting into the top colleges of my dreams?

oh noes. if u fail an ap test colleges will never accept you. you will end up working at local fast food place for the rest of your life…

jkjk
comparing to other elements such as gpa or sat/act scores, ap tests are not worth as much. as long as everything elese are fine a few 2s wont kill you

my friend got a 2 on AP Physics B her junior year
she took about six or seven others and got 5s and 4s on those

she got into all of the schools to which she applied – which included Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Cornell

i don’t think APs can really hurt
but it probably helps to have some good scores

I don’t think they really use it that much of a factor in admissions (although in my opinion, they should).

I’m giving up online AP classes, as my school doesn’t offer them, for actual college courses. I’ll take the appropriate AP exams though.

Hopefully not much.

I mean, on the Common App, all you do is self-report your scores. You dont even have to send it in officially. Obviously 4s and 5s would be great and you would want to show them off but I don’t think getting a few 3s will kill your chances. As long as you don’t get a 1 on any of them. AP Physics is notorious for being extremely difficult…

I’m sure all the other parts of the application is much more important (essays, recs…etc). Even your SAT scores and Subject test scores. You have to send those in officially.

So I think in the end, they can help you (especially if you get amazing scores) but they won’t really hurt you much. Think of those kids in schools that just don’t prepare them very well for AP exams. Sure, they can prepare by themselves but still, it’s not completely fair to them. It’ll be much harder for those kids to get 4s and 5s even if they’re really smart because it’s a lot of info to learn by yourselves.
