How much do you actually take to college

What do you need to take freshman year as far as your room, clothing, coats, shoes, bedding computers etc

i took

 • laptop
 • 7 pants, 14 shirts, 14 underwear, 14 pair of socks, 3 nice shirts (for more formal events), two pairs of shoes
 • one light jacket, one heavier jacket for winter
 • bathroom things (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, razor)
 • books for fall semester, notebooks for fall semester, pens, pencils
 • bedding stuff (including pillow)

I can’t think of other stuff atm, but this all fit into one big suitcase (check-in), one smaller suitcase (carry-on #1), and my backpack (carry-on #2)

If you’re female, please don’t take two suitcases full of clothing. I know many girls that did that…and they all complained that they shouldn’t have taken so much clothing.

Haha I don’t think I own 2 suitcases full of clothing. So basically like 2 weeks worth of clothes?

bring an extra pair of sheets. that way you don’t always have to do laundry to have bedding ready. if you like sleeping with certain items/blankets bring those. bring a fan, dorms are usually very hot especially when school first starts. You may want to split larger items (tv, dvd player, microwave, fridge, etc.) with your roommate if you’re interested in having them. I’ve always found I’ve brought too much even when I try to downsize. You will probably bring the most your first move-in day which is ok! Try to find out what your roommate may be bringing so you don’t have two of everything.

Bring ID! If you have a passport, bring it. It may seem odd but I’ve always needed several forms of ID when applying for a job. One year I didn’t have my passport with me and it tied up the process. Your social security card is another option. If you do bring these things, keep track of them! It’s sensitive material but it’s helped me in the past having them on me.

As for clothing, I think the other user had the right idea. Try not to bring too much. Have things that are suitable for more formal occasions (job interviews, college functions, a nice date, etc.) and bring something for harsher weather especially if you’re going to be facing mud/rain/snow. There have been times when I haven’t had the right kind of shoes on and it was definitely an avoidable irritant.

And bringing a few items from home is always nice.

As for something I didn’t use,my father bought me a safe that I never used once. it was way too bulky and I didn’t have the room. You may be interested in a lockbox, personal preference there.

My first year I had two suitcases, shipped two medium boxes, and went shopping twice when I got to my school area. As you can probably guess, all of this was unneccesary. I didn’t use everything I bought with me/went shopping for. Thank God I had the common sense to bring some stuff back home over spring break or going home at the end of the year would’ve been hell.

Anywho, my advice to you is think. Ask yourself, “will I really use this?” if the answer is no, don’t bring it. Don’t just bring things just to bring them, because remember, you have to bring that stuff back home at the end of the year.

@ansar: very nice! I wish I had the common sense in the beginning to bring just that. But I learned my lesson so I won’t be doing that again. LOL.

@ansar- I’m assuming you’re a boy…fyi, girls have to take a lot more things with them than that. If I can get clothes down to 2 suitcases, I will consider that an accomplishment, and if I can get some of my shoes into another, again, that will be an accomplishment for me because at this point, I have no idea how to decide which clothes and shoes I can live without.

Everything should fit into roughly two suitcases. Remember, you’ll be living there for a year and you’ll be buying things, and you don’t want to have to drag too much stuff home (particularly if you have to fly, in which case you’ll have to ship, which is a pain in the butt).
With the two suitcases, I’m not including school supplies, which you’ll buy and accumulate as the school year goes on. If all your clothes and shoes don’t fit into two suitcases, then there’s definitely something wrong (speaking as a girl who loves clothes, shoes, and shopping).

some clothes,laptop,books,basketball.

Also remember you will probably go home during winter break so you can bring (or take back) things that you realized would have been useful (were wasteful).

guilty as charged

yeah, but just don’t overdo it…A girl on my flight had 5 suitcases, but then again, she was an international student.

Take what you want and divide that in half.
