How much does athletic achievement help?

If someone is an All-Conference Varsity athlete for two sports and a team captain, etc, how much does this help in the admission process (not good enough to be recruited)?

I ask because several of my friends (me included) cannot join many other clubs or activities because sports consume all of our time, so it's difficult to have an EC that shows that you explore your academic interests outside of the classroom (ie math club and competitions, etc)

Is athletic achievement considered in the admission process, or maybe being a captain because it shows leadership?

Last thing! Is it worth it to put smaller clubs on your application. Like if I add Women for Women club, would it be worth it? Would adcoms see it and think I'm trying to pad my resume? Should I just include EC's where I have a position (school newspaper editor, etc)?

Thanks

I’d say that athletic excellence counts for a lot. However, you should know that there are others out there who have all of your athletic accolades AND find a way to participate in other extracurricular activities. One-dimensional jocks…are rather boring. On the other hand, a basketball player who is captain/MVP of his team, garners all-league honors, holds leadership positions in multiple clubs, sings in the choir, plays the piano, wins History Day/spelling bee/math competitions, teaches himself how to program, speaks 4 languages, has perfect AP/SAT/ACT scores, and takes the hardest classes at his high school…will do very well in the college admissions process. That’s the kind of student that every college wants.

On your college applications, feel free to include any “smaller” clubs in which you participated meaningfully. Let your conscience be your guide.

Haha yeah of course, but there are very few, if any, people like that.

Thanks for the reply.

To be honest, I went to college with a bunch of people like that. :-)

Be passionate about what you do. You’ll get into a great college and a have a terrific time there.
