How much magnitude is this accomplishment really? Especially to some of the Ivies, how impressive would admissions officers weight this?

Well I was a two year varsity captain and star player in two sports. I also went to junior olympics in my main sport all years and I was rejected from MIT. The coach highly supported me but no go.

It counts as a strong extracurricular since you have a leadership role. It helps, but unless you’re getting recruited, it won’t do anything else for you.

Great, but you still need the grades…

It’s definitely an above average EC, better than what most students have, but it won’t matter for highly selective institutions if youre not in at least the top ~5% with 2100+ SAT scores. If so ten it will definitely help you!

Edit: I just saw your chance thread. I think you have a very good chance in getting into at least one very selective school.

I’m no college admissions officer, but to me that sounds VERY impressive.

agree with kevycanuck. On another note, it sounds tiring! :(

So teams have 5 captains, so eh, not a huge hook

^ Some teams only have two captains.

Yeah it’ll help out. It shows dedication, leadership, and that you’re actually good at the sport.

I feel like people who haven’t played sports before don’t comprehend the time commitment required. For me, sports take up a much larger portion of my time than my 4 AP classes (and my school’s passing rates for AP tests are pretty close to 90%, so these classes are by no means easy). During season, sports can eat up anywhere from 20-30 hours a week, depending on the number of games you play. Since you’re a varsity captain in 3 sports, I’m extremely impressed that you can manage everything, not to mention excelling in your sports.

On the other hand, people who haven’t been to JO’s (junior olympics) tend to overrate the importance of it. Teams do not have to qualify to go to JO’s. Placing highly at JO’s would be pretty impressive.

All the other stuff was kind of off topic though. Unfortunately, Ivies don’t give it enough weight IMO, but it is pretty impressive to them. It won’t get you in without solid stats and essays though.
