How much does being an URM actually help?...

Hehehe, URM status all the way.

Hey, the more that they give favor to URMs... eventually one day (and it's possible that it's already happening) it will be hard to come across a qualified white male. Can anyone see that happening?

^The percentage of White/Non-Hispanic students at Harvard is 42%, while the combined percentage of URM's (hispanic, black, native americans) is only 17%.

urm's are citizens right??

I dont think it's 17% URM. 13% on collegeboard is non-resident alien and theres another 10% unreported. so its more than that.

^Pretty sure that means international students, and I defined URM's as the URM's getting admissions boosts (Black, Hispanic, Native American).

It's also very unlikely that any black, hispanic, or native american student would not report their ethnic status when applying.

and you got that info from collegeboard also?

The percentages? Yes. (Referring to question below, stupid post problem)

Wouldn't non-resident aliens be considered International students and not URMs?

If anybody wants to see an example of URM rejected at Princeton go to "Princeton class of 2012 decisions" thread and look at today's posts.

Poster might be a troll, but the thread is worth checking anyway.

It seems that alot of ppl are associating URM with lower scores, but this is not always the case. For example my 34 is at the 75% and my other stuff is good, and I completed a research project on photon tunneling probability that I am sending in (17 pages). So how does being a URM affect those who ARE qualified? Would it mean that it does not matter?

^Dbate, unfortunately there are only so many people like you. On average, URMs do have lower scores than whites and asians - this is indisputable.

There are more than enough students like Dbate to fill all the spots.

emm... what is URM?

(through outlinks to official federal government pages). The term "URM," to answer a question above, refers to "underrepresented minority." Ordinarily, that is taken to refer to domestic students (citizens and permanent residents) only, not to international students.

What constitutes an underrepresented minority? I'd presume the majority of my schools lack Irish born students, would Country of Birth enable me for those additional "URM" points?

Okay people are going to annoy with me this. As many CC people will tell you otherwise that itdoesnot help. It is a lie as people twist data. Being a URM helps tremendously as bar is lower as compare to within same socio economic group from other race. However, most advatges for URM is grabbed by the well to do or rich URMs. The URM kids who come from downtown chicago or inner city NY has lot of odds against them. They have very less chnace but if somone is very intellegent than it helps tremendously. But these kind of inner city URM kids are far and few.

Competition among chinese, korean and Indian kids is brutal as there are many who have SAT and GPA and are looking to get in. They apply more in numbers and hence more competition. How do I know I have a kid in Yale, one nephew in H and one kid is going to be in Harvard. However, on other hand rich white legacy kids also gets a very big boost as they have so many in built advantages just being born in rich families. The policies are in favour of them. Ivies are still trying to help the kids from poor socio economic background irrespectice of race. But the numbers are not that huge. As we know life is not fair. :(
