Ok, so if you have a 3.7 UW GPA, but have a 2380 SAT, 5 nearly perfect (<780) subject test in math and science, 5 on many AP's(all sciences plus some humanities), and a predicted 40 in IB, plus being a urm, do you still have a shot. I'm a junior and I don't want false hope.

dont sweat it. You’re definately a match with MIT.

*just add some extra-curriculars

Plenty of EC’s, plus a few major research papers with a local professor. It’s just that everyone’s stats that I look at have most of what I have PLUS a 4.0.

You won’t get rejected because you have a 3.7, and you seem to have a pretty good shot. But MIT is competitive for everyone, so that doesn’t mean you’re likely to get accepted either.

Where are the B’s? Are they in math/science classes, or humanities classes?

Humanities and fine arts. I got a 89 in the first part of Algebra II last year though.

I got mostly B’s in math and I was accepted, with lower standardized test scores.

I think you still have a chance.

I got an 81 and an 83 in IPC and Biology, respectively, my freshman year. I also got an 89 in world history.

However, I got my stuff together sophomore year, and increased my GPA from a 92-> 100.2… and only got 98+ on all my math/science classes.

So yeah, I don’t think having that GPA/SAT will disqualify you. It shows you are qualified, but not accepted. Acceptance, as has been said many times, does not depend on the numbers.

So, don’t “lose hope” but expect rejection. Anyone applying to HYPM should.

PS. I was accepted.

Because you are a URM with above a 2300 (you are literally one of about 5 ive seen over my 3 years on CC), any academic flaws will prbly be forgiven.

@Rtgroce123, I am a URM and I got a 35 ACT (which translates to a 2360~), and 800 on my Physics, Math 2, Chemistry SAT2’s.

It makes me mad that people see URM and immediately point at it and say it will probably be alright. About 20 URM kids from my school applied to MIT… only 2 were accepted. That is at least at about the average acceptance rate of MIT. And while I do recognize that we have certain advantages, you shouldn’t account any chance for success to our ethnicity.

OMG, how could there only be 5 URMs with a 2300+ on CC when there are three (OP, selter, and me) right here?
2300 plus URM does not guarantee acceptance anywhere.

@RTgroce123 makes a couple of assumptions, I think. First - there are probably quite a few URMs here who do not mention their “URMness”. Second - the percentage of URMs that he knows about on CC with high scores is unlikely to represent the percentage of URMs with high scores generally or applying to MIT. The CC crowd is not, in my view, particularly good as a sampling.

even with that GPA, you seem pretty solid. I hear (don’t sue me if I’m wrong) that MIT throws out filler classes like fine arts and recalculate your GPA.

Yes, there are signifcantly more than five – even on CC. In fact, there are more than three URM’s on CC with 2400.

GPA matters a lot to MIT. 3.7+ to be on the safe side, although youc an get in with lower stats in rare circusmtances.

You good.
You have zero chance if you don’t apply.

Do they recalculate your GPA?
