just wondering ... does anyone know how much of an affect having legacy at Yale counts for admission?? thanks :)

i hope a lot, because without that i'm just an average applicant!

What has been said is that plain "legacy" status gives an applicant: 1. a look/and discussion by the full Committee - no getting washed out by one reviewer and 2. "a thumb on the scale" for the legacy applicant when being weighed against equal non-legacy candidates. Legacies with Yale buidlings named after them are diffrent matter. My own assesment is that an athletic recruitment (definitely) or "urm" status (probably) counts for more than legacy status.

i think it depends on the "type" of legacy you are, how active your parent(s)/grandparent(s)/etc. have been as alumni (if they donate, are involved in alumni activities). Also, I think legacy is less important in RD, its only if the applicant applied EA that it matters more.

I am hoping that's not the case. My son is applying as a legacy RD.

A double-legacy from my school was deferred EA. I don't know if her parents are active donors, though.

yeah, my suitemate double-legacy (grandfather went to Yale) did EA and, of course, got in.
then again he's filthy rich and his father/grandfather paid to renovate our college.

legacies count. i know of a legacy at a different Ivy (a building on the campus was named after his family!) that got rejected. then at graduation he got a call telling him there was a spot being held for him in the next year's class.
