How much does legacy help for an out of stater?

Im applying from out of state and my mom went to UVa law. I was wondering how much of an advantage this would give me?

Officially, legacies are supposed to be treated like in-state for admissions purposes.

However, in any case, it is extremely hard to be admitted regardless of background or geography, and anecdotal evidence shows legacy in the end gives only a minor bump for out of state. In other words, many very highly qualified legacy applicants get denied.

You might want to know that the U.Va. alumni office gives helpful advice for legacy applicants. I highly recommend contacting the alumni office.

Thanks a lot to both of you. Do you know how I would contact the alumni association and possibly have that conversation?

Your mom would have to be a member, I believe (almost everyone is). You can probably find info on their website about when the sessions are available. I’d try to combine with an official tour and official admissions session on the same trip.

A mother I know who went said the Alum Assoc was very helpful and highlighted some things they didn’t hear at the official session.

spcampbell, even if your mom is not a member, the Alumni Assoc will help. Ms. Garver is the liason we met with, and she was very helpful. We found both the group session and the individual session very enlightening. Ms. Garver sat down with my son and went through his transcript, reviewed test scores, GPA, extra-curriculars, etc and assessed his chances. I wish we had known about this service sooner. My son is apparently a very strong candidate, but it is thanks to his GRT and guidance counselor, not because we knew all the facts. For instance, I had no idea some AP classes are considered “soft” or that recommended really means “probably should do it.” My 8th grader will be more knowledgable about the entire process:).

Here is the alumni link for the admission liaison program:

Shot through the heart. If only I had done well on my SAT II’s the first time around. Now I’m applying with a weak spot in my application from OOS… You know what that means.
