How much does legacy status matter?

Hi Everyone!
I'm applying for the class of 2016, and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge pertaining to the importance (if any) of being a legacy at UofC. My dad graduated from the University of Chicago as an undergrad and the University of Chicago medical school. He currently does alumni interviews for prospective students and donates money every year (not a huge amount, $5000ish?). I am, of course, not hoping to rely on anyone but myself to gain admission, but was just wondering if being a legacy might make any difference, as Chicago is one of my top choices.
Thanks!

Haha “not a huge amount, $5000ish.” Looks like UChicago did well for your father.

I work in the calling center at UChicago soliciting gifts from alumni. Rest assured that $5,000 is a comparatively huge amount. Anyway, this will probably mean good things for your application as long as your test scores, grades, and essays are at least on target.

Thank for the input! And I didn’t mean to imply that I don’t think $5000 is a lot, I’ve just heard so many stories about parents donating entire buildings or millions of dollars to get their child into a school.

A girl in one of my classes is one of the dumber students I’ve encountered – I don’t mean that as badly as it sounds (she’s very nice), it’s just the truth. We all jokingly wondered how the hell she got in – I mean, she obviously had something going for her to get into UChicago. Turns out she was a legacy (her parents now work here, I think)… don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

Although do not know specifics of Chicago, legacy typically counts more ED than RD.
