I would like to get a discussion going on this. I've noticed a plurality of kids from Gov school (especially Sciences) going to Princeton each year. Thoughts?

I attended the gov school of engineering and technology last summer and I just got into Princeton (as well as Columbia and Cornell) =] I honestly don’t know how much it helps in the eyes of the admissions officers, but I think part of the correlation is simply due to the quality of students who attend gov school. It is a very selective program that many of the top students from NJ interested in science and engineering attend. Not only are many of the students extremely smart with near perfect SATs and GPAs, but they are all also very involved in a multitude of activities and very interesting people. Although I’m sure it is impressive to have attended gov school, I think most of the students get in simply because they are outstanding applicants. I have no idea though, I’m just a fellow student!

I think it helps actually does help significantly! A bunch of people I talked to who were in NJ Governor’s school said almost everyone who went got into Princeton. Of course, they were all pretty impressive to begin with.

I’ve been told around 19 out of the 80 something kids from GSET got into Princeton (many of whom also got into multiple other ivies)

I think it helps, but of course governor’s school is a selective pool anyway =) As far as I recall, we had something like 15 accepted to Princeton and 10 to Harvard/MIT/Yale (of course with overlaps), and also plenty of Columbias and Penns. Other top schools had fewer, but mostly because fewer people applied. I don’t think we had any luck with Stanford though =P

Any more thoughts?

I went to GSET last summer too, and I think it does help, especially if you’re applying for engineering. For one thing, when they look at your application, and see GSET, they already know that from a pool of the top 1-3 students from each public high school in NJ, you were in the top 25%. It also shows a demonstrated interest in engineering, which I think is helpful especially for girls applying for engineering, because schools want to keep their female/male ratio up in the engineering colleges. That’s just my two cents though. It obviously can’t hurt. =D

Is it more of a connection or just correlation?
