How much does not being top 10% hurt?

My unweighted GPA is currently 3.895, placing me in the second decile at my school. My GPA shows an upward trend, though (3 B's freshman year, 1 B first semester soph year, all A's afterward), and my weighted GPA is about 4.1-4.3~, most likely, but not surely, placing me in the top 10% weighted. My school does not report rank, but they do report unweighted deciles. I also have quite a few ECs (check my previous threads?). My question is, how much do you think it will hurt me?

Depends on where you are applying. For ivies (and other top schools) it is a major issue because schools are under constant pressure to improve their reported stats, and one of the most commonly reported numbers is the percentage of admits that are in the top 10% of their high school class. Generally speaking, an unhooked student outside of the top tenth has a very low chance of admission to such schools. Less then 3% of Yale’s class of 2015 was ranked below the top tenth of their HS class, for instance.

I will be applying to top-tier schools (Ivies, UCs, others in the top 25).
