I know some colleges care about volunteering more than others and I was just wondering how much Wharton cared. I spent a lot of my time in high school volunteering and running my own 501© (500 hours so far) instead of other activities such as math Olympiad and what not. I was just wondering how much Wharton cares about volunteering and if it would have been a better use of my time to do something more college oriented. The issue is I really legitimately wanted to help my community so I volunteered but I feel like that is biting me back a little bit.
There is no one pathway to gaining admittance to Wharton or any top tier school Do what you want and let your passion shine though.
@happy1 Ok cool thank you, I am just nervous as people have said I may not have shown I was good enough at math to get into Wharton and I am afraid that it is because I tutored in math as opposed to participated in a club for math
I just read your other post. I think people are saying that you may be seen as a weak math student because you didn’t take the Math Level 2 SAT II, which Wharton specifically recommends its applicants to take. Furthermore, your great ACT score is brought down because of the math section. You are also not taking AP Calculus BC, which is the highest level of math offered under the AP program. I don’t think it has anything to do with you starting your own tutoring service. In fact, I think that demonstrates leadership, so Wharton would like that.
Even if you were a part of certain clubs/societies like Math Olympiad or Mu Alpha Theta, the lack of SAT II score, “Weak” ACT math score, and not taking BC would’ve gave the impression that you are not the strongest math student out there. The reality is many applicants have 800 math SAT II, 36 math ACT or 800 SAT math, and are taking BC or higher level courses at their local college or online.
@ayakobi26 No, ya that stuff hurts me also but I was also reading up on Math ECs and how the lack of them would hurt me on a different website. Also my school only offers Calculus to barely any people so I hope that is taken into account. With the SAT II tests I screwed up. My counselor didn’t know they were a thing and I wasn’t responsible enough to look into them. I am taking math 2 on Saturday but that is too little too late for UPenn. Also do you think AP Physics C would help show I am good at math, as I find that class much harder than Calc and it is often regraded as harder than B/C at my school.
I just edited my original post so read that for my thinking on your EC situation.
The officers will definitely view your application in context of your school.
I’m also taking Physics C this year. I agree that I find myself studying more for Physics C than BC, but I’m not sure how the officers will react. They might even wonder why you opted not to take BC if you’re doing well in physics.
