How much does which high school you attend matter?

So how much does going to a better high school matter when it comes to the college admissions process, because my school is ranked quite high on US News gold medal list (around 50, but won't say the exact number for privacy reasons). How much does this boost the value of my GPA compared to someone else from other high schools with a slightly higher GPA?

I don’t think the rigor of your school matters much.

My school is around 30, but low averages from a tougher school are given a cursory glance.

Some kids from my school transferred out after sophomore year because they didn’t like the pressure. They ended up in “easier” high schools and received higher GPAs. Since they’re still very smart, they ended up at schools like Princeton and MIT.

:/

I’m not talking like a 3.9 at an easier school compared to a 3.3., but what about say a 3.6 at a harder school compared to maybe a 3.75 at an easier school?

Some universities look at whether you took the most rigorous schedule available to you.

For example, if your school only offered two AP courses in English Literature and Calculus BC, and you took both of them, that may look better than if your school offered a dozen AP courses and you took only four of them which were Environmental Science, Statistics, Psychology, and Physics B.

It matters. Compare my school, a decent public one, to Harvard-Westlake. There is a great difference between the schools and the colleges like Harvard-Westlake more.

Makes me regret not taking my full scholarship to McCallie… Ohh well.

Adding on to what jenga said, if your school is notably very rigorous, then taking only a few APs and doing well in them can be very favorable.
