My son will be freshman in fall, and I'd appreciate any advice from current students/parents about the best way to "furnish" dorm rooms--the one double we went through on a campus tour was pretty small and didn't have room for much. Do students find they need extra lamps/rugs, etc? Do folks have fridges in their rooms?

Also--how do people get laundry done? I seem to remember a washing machine in the entry we stuck our head in, but is there a linen service for sheets/towels and that sorta stuff?

Do you NEED extra lamps, rugs, etc? no. But obviously that stuff makes dorm rooms homier. I'd say the only lighting must-have is a desk lamp, but many people also have floor lamps (especially if they don't like the overhead light--it may be flourescent). I think all freshman dorm rooms are carpted but it's industrial carpet so a little area rug is nice. If your son is going to be living in a double this is probably the kind of thing he should talk to his roommate about. Also, a lot of this can be worked out on one of the many entry trips to Walmart, Target, etc during orientation.

Laundry is in all the freshman dorms, and most people just take everything downstairs and do it themselves. There is a laundry service available from the drycleaner in town, but very few people send their laundry out.
