How much is too much debt?

So I will be going to college next year and I don't expect my parents to contribute anything. Not because they're heartless but because they just cant afford it. Anything that is not covered by fin aid and scholarships I am expecting to cover.

So what would you say is too much? At the school I'm going to now it's about 30k, which isn't too bad. But I'm planning on transfering to, hopefully, NYU, which is a notorious dream breaker when it comes to their fin aid. So NYU tuition and room&board is pretty high. So I will have to borrow that too.</p>

What would be too much for you?

I'm interested in knowing how much is enough too... I got no money :(

BUMP

Have a look at the loan calculator at finaid.org - enter your projected loans and interest rate and it will tell you your monthly payments and the salary recommended to be able to pay that loan and still have a life. Don't forget to add the interest that will accumulate during your time in college if you are unable to pay it as you go along.

For my own kids for undergrad I would discourage them from more than @ $20,000 in total debt.
