How much Math do you know?

Hi there, I'm creating this thread for the purpose of seeing how much Math CCers in high school know, and how I compare.

I'm in the Class of 2013, and I'm in the process of mastering Calculus by the end of the summer. I do have a decent understanding of Algebra, Combinatorics, and Number Theory from my AOPS books. Back in the ninth grade I had dreams of participating in the IMO but I guess it's a bit too late for that unless I REALLY dig in.

So how much Math do you know? Let's discuss what types of Math we like/don't-like, our attitude towards it, how much aptitude we have for it, et cetera.

I don’t really like math, but I’m really good at Algebra.
i hate Geometry though

I’m not really good at doing math. But I understand the concepts. I just can’t perform huge/long equations well.

But I know lots of Algebra, mainly because I finished Algebra 2 and going into Pre-Calculus.

I made it to USAMO last year and I self studied multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra (although they had nothing to do with USAMO)

Finally some people to help me with the combinatorics problems that come up in my daily life!

Q: If 3 guys walk into a bar on a Wednesday night, how many people are in the bar?

I LOVED GEOMETRY, I had such an awesome teacher (super easy class, but he answered all my questions that went above and beyond). I really sucked at Algebra I (worst average in the class, I failed practically every test even though I paid such close attention in class, always participated, did all my homework and went to every tutoring session) but in the end, I got the highest score on the final exam (a perfect score at that). Algebra II was pretty easy… (most of it was algebra I review for me)… pre-cal was so-so (some of the stuff was pretty confusing especially since I did the course online…)… hmm… but my favorite thing to do by far is triangles and trigonometry. I really enjoy math in school, and I’ve always been fairly good at it. :)

I’m going into Calculus. I like Geometry and Algebra (and even logs and limits), but I hate Trig with a passion. :)

I took Gifted&Talented pre-calc freshman year, AP Calc AB and AP Stat sophomore year, AP Calc BC junior year, and Linear Algebra at a local university senior year (Calc BC was the highest level course my school offered). Unfortunately, I couldn’t fit any college classes into my schedule for second semester of senior year without missing high school classes, so it’s been a semester since I’ve done math at all and and over a year since I’ve done any Calc. Not good considering I’m taking Calc III this fall and have declared a math major! Wish me luck!

Thank you muchly!

I’m a sophomore, and I’m taking Calculus BC this year. I plan to learn linear algebra and multi variable calculus by the end of high school. I’m also studying AoPS, and hope I can get into USAMO at least once, although that is a bit of a long-shot for me.

Also class of 2013. I know calc III, linear algebra, combo from AOPS V2, a bit of number theory (up to quadratic reciprocity). Taking ODE and hopefully real analysis next yr

@COMBOnatorics: I’ve heard that you haven’t “done Mathematics” until you’ve taken Real Analysis. I wish you well.

@Episteme: You’re already more advanced than anyone I know, so don’t fret TOO much about not getting into USAMO.

@ameliab12: I’m not wishing you “luck” because IMO luck is for people who can’t get buy on pure-hard work. Given how advanced you are already, you’ll probably do well in Multivariable Calc. It’s nice to see another person intent on majoring in Math in here.

@WabtyWabty: Sure, the way Geometry is presented in high school allows for a more logical approach (as opposed to just memorizing rules), but technically all Math is logical. Sadly, it isn’t treated very well by whoever designed America’s education system (well, assuming one person designed on their own).

@ShadowMist: Maybe you didn’t like Trig because of your teacher? I’m just guessing, but I wouldn’t be surprised because when I took Trig many of my classmates couldn’t understand the teacher (well, she couldn’t speak English clearly, so that played a part).

@Teaspoons: That’s really nice to hear. Good teachers really can make a difference, can’t they? Getting the highest score on the Alg 1 final exam must have meant a lot to you.

@ThisCouldBeHeavn: Hmm…Let x be the number of people in the bar prior to the three people entering. The number of people in the bar is now x + 3. Hey, that’s the best I could do. <_<

@nukemyschool: Making USAMO is definitely a significant achievement. I envy you. I plan on self studying those university-level subjects too, because I might not go to college immediately after high school.

@lastapprentice: I can somewhat relate to you, because there have been plenty of times where I had to plan out my Math on paper rather than just mentally calculate it ala brute force.

@Weeknd: Is it because of the proofs? My friend hated Geometry because of the proofs. The typical public schools usually don’t treat it well.

Nope, it’s zero, since nobody can actually be inside [a bar](http://www.hobbysubmarines.com/images/1000_round_steel_bar.jpg)

^ahahahaha. That made me smile. =)

lol math humor.

Anyway, I’m going to be a senior, and I tested last year for IB Math SL. I actually liked it. If you don’t know, IB Math combines calculus, statistics, etc. And I’m taking Math HL next year, and I don’t really know what to expect. Anyone have experience with that class?

As for algebra vs. geometry, I really had a bad experience in geometry class. I found it not math-y enough and just frustrating rules. To me, math is deducing answers a la algebra or calculus. It just makes sense. That’s why I really love math, it’s like a puzzle or a challenge. Though I couldn’t see myself doing it all the time. I actually want to pursue art :)

I took calc ab/bc last year and absolutely loved it. I had an amazing teacher though; all 18 kids in my class signed up to take “calc 3 with mr.______” even though it wasn’t offered at the time. Of course our school had to offer it after being bombarded with student requests for the same class with the same teacher. But honestly if I had a different teacher I’d probably hate it.

Other than calc 1,2 and 3, algebra 1,2 geometry, and pre calc with trig. I didnt have time to fit in statistics:/

2+2=4

I know that much math!

I love math, but that’s probably only because it’s the only subject that I feel as if I’m halfway competent in. I will (hopefully) take BC Calc next year (self-studying precalc this summer), but if I don’t get in, then I’ll just self-study it on my own. I love Algebra (had kind of a bad experience with Alg1, but Alg2 was really interesting) and Geometry (My mind’s not really wired for geometry, but the class I was in was taught by a really good teacher and was super challenging.) but HATE graphing of any kind, be it trig, rational functions, exp/log, conics, or whatever. Next summer I hope to take MVC/DE/LA at a local university and then get on to some “real mathematics” afterwards. By the way, can you take the three concurrently, and if not, what’s the order that you should take them in? Thanks. :)
