How much money do you guys spend on food/month? (No Meal Plan)

Just wondering for those of you not living in the residence halls how much money you typically spend per month on food if you don't mind sharing. How you spend the money might be helpful too (i.e. you eat out every single day or you buy groceries every two weeks and cook or a combination of the two).

Thanks!

I was spending upwards of $150-$200 a week when I was eating out almost all the time. I do the grocery thing 90% of the time now and spend about $50-$75 a week on good food (seafood, fresh fruits and veggies, etc.).

Those numbers are all for 2 people, by the way. It’ll be cheaper if you’re buying for yourself but, unfortunately, not a whole lot cheaper.

Bumping this!

Yea, not eating out, I spend, on avg, about $45 a week. That includes food and things like toiletries, household items, etc. I live alone in a 1bdm apartment, and don’t eat a lot compared to most guys. I try to only buy food on sale at the local safeway. Eating out burns a ton of cash, and though I could afford to do it 2-3 times a week, I rarely ever do. I mean, 5 to 9 dollars on a single meal is pretty high compared to what I spend for a weeks worth of stuff. But it’s nice after like a midterm or something. Saving money = new macbook, lol.

^
what the… what kind of food do you eat? how can u only spend like 60 bucks on food for a week?

I don’t know where you got $60, I said I spend, on avg, $45. Here is an example:

Milk $1.99
Bread $3.00
Lunch Meat $3.00
Cereal $3.00
Apples (3-4) $2.50
Bananas (4-5) $2.50
Vegetables (varies) $4
Steak/chicken/pork $6

Pasta (varies) $5

Total $30.99 plus tax

I really only drink water, don’t buy candy (occasional 75 cent twix!) or chips, except maybe tortilla chips. Plus things like mayo, mustard, peanut butter, jelly, canned soups, rice…things that can buy in bulk and last a long time. I live alone, doesn’t cost that much. Helps to buy things on sale.

@Smallz: you’re going to live till 100 man.

I spend most money on chip, chocolate, icecream…
I can’t save $$ by cooking myself because all the money I save go back to buying junk food… How can I limit myself?
BTW, what do u guys eat at lunch on campus, do u bring your own lunch? what food?

I spend $70-80 per week. I always spend $60+ for groceries at Safeway. And it’s variable whether I eat out or get a snack like coffee/pastries during/after school. When I really crave food that I cannot cook, then I spend past $60. And this is spending just for me.

As for lunch on campus, I usually bring a snack like a bag of chips to eat in class. I hold my hunger until I get back to my apartment. I also make sure to eat meals before class if my day is like a 11am-2pm schedule.

So the general consensus I’m getting is somewhere in the $65/month average for normal people (sorry Smallz I eat a lot =))

$65/week is probably somewhat safe. A little high if you’re careful with your food purchases, a little low if you eat nothing but organic and a lot of it.

Just keep in mind that a gallon of milk is ~$4, a loaf of bread is $2.50-$4+, carton of eggs is $1.99-$5+, etc. If you shop at Safeway. If you shop at Andronico’s or Berkeley Bowl or Trader Joe’s, well, it goes up accordingly.

Sales are your friend and Safeway has a lot of them.

i need to eat steak/seafood everyday
