Hey guys, so the first time I took the ACT, I got a 30 (33 on english/writing) having taken only one practice test and not reviewing the answers. I was just wondering what ACT veterans think I can bring my score up to. Is it possible to bring it up to a 33/34 by doing like 10 practice tests. What do you guys recommend doing to study? I already have the Red Book, but are there any other good prep books out there? I really appreciate any opinions; thank you!

I’m no ACT veteran, but I’m pretty sure that regular practice and meticulous review of your answers will definitely raise your score. I use the 1296 ACT questions from Princeton and the Red Book – both are great.

I got a 29 on my first ACT practice test, with no knowledge about it prior to the test. And after a couple of practice tests, I took the official one, getting a 33 :D

If you got a 30 without much effort, then I can tell you that with a lot of effort you can get into the 33-36 range. A 30 is very impressive, but since it wasn’t that hard for you to achieve, I’m sure you can do better!

Why would you take a test without thorough preparation? You probably will get 33 to 36 if you did practice more and went through the answers. You could have save the money and found out your basal score from a free practice test. You just did an expensive practice test and wasted a chance. It is hard to say what score you will eventually get. Just do more practice tests until you reached a plateau. Typically, one may get 10-20% boost after thorough practice.
