How much spending money will I need?

I’m trying to figure out how much I should plan to work this summer so that I’ll have enough by the time fall comes around (I already have some saved).

I plan on using the money for clothes shopping (I love shopping but I can budget myself if necessary), buying food and snacks (fast food, pizza, and the like), occasional restaurants, going to concerts/movies/events, and of course, laundry!

Would $300 per month be enough? What are your opinions? Thanks!

$300 per month seems a little high to me, But that’s just based on my own experience. If anything, I dont think you will need any more than that. During the first month or so, there is so much free food being given away at different events, you probably won’t need to spend much at all, and depending on the meal plan you have, you can easily get by without spending any cash. There are also a lot of free events throughout the year, and about every week they play a free movie at the Union too. Hope this helps! :)

Ah thank you! Would $200 seem more reasonable then?

Some people get by without spending anything (other than for books), it honestly depends on how much you want. If you plan on buying pizza every night, that’s one thing. But when pizza once a week is what, $50-60? So that leaves $100+ for shopping a month. Is that more than you typically spend a month on clothes? I never buy clothes so for me $10 would be a lot.
If you look at your budget that way, you’ll be able to see how much you want to spend on what each month. That makes it easier than just looking at one number and trying to make it fit for the month.

There isn’t much to spend money on when you’re a freshman on campus without a car, other than eating out. Shopping options are pretty limited if you don’t have transportation (unless you buy online), because there are very few clothing stores you can walk to (an Old Navy, Target, Urban Outfitters, Pitaya). The food at OSU is pretty good, and there shouldn’t be much of a reason to eat out frequently at restaurants off campus. Laundry, if you do around 1 or 2 loads a week, should cost you maybe $100-$150 total for the year, and a lot of students will bring a week or two’s worth of laundry home on break to save money. Student tickets at the gateway movie theater south of campus are only $6.50.

I think I spent less than $100 a month on average as a freshman on all the things you’ve listed, and I did end up buying some clothing and other stuff online.

Okay, thanks so much!
