How much stock does NW put into legacy?

I’m a high school junior
will have a ~4.3 by end of year (4.0 uw), small public school, pretty much taking every AP my school has by senior year
relatively weak EC (mostly sports-related, a couple clubs, NHS, service, etc)
no test scores yet (should be very high)

My parents both went to NW for undergrad, and my grandpa just retired from Kellogg after ~45 years (writing a letter to admissions for me if I apply), a few family other members that won’t count also went.

The real question is how much legacy and the likes will help me in ED next year (so far my plan). If anyone has any experience with or knowledge about NW’s stance on legacy, that would be great. Not sure what my chances actually are with everything, and I want to know so I can plan ahead a little bit

Thanks!

Legacy is not that important for NU. Look at the Common Data Set, Page 7: http://enrollment.northwestern.edu/pdf/common-data/2014-15.pdf

Hypothetically, if you have identical stats with another applicant - but you have legacy and they do not - then it could come into play in your favor. Obviously, top grades and scores are more important.

These do not look like “weak ECs” to me. My son got in ED a couple years back with similar ECs. His sports commitments precluded other ECs - and admissions understands that. Good Luck - but don’t count too much on legacy.

My husband and I are NU grads and we have so many friends from school whose kids did not get admitted in the last three years. They were all double legacies with super high scores and high GPAs from competitive high schools. I think NU really wants kids who want to be there, so ED is still the best chance. Essays seem super important these days. You need to say exactly why NU is the best fit for you and what you will bring to campus.

And it’s NU not NW.
