Hi, I'm a transfer student looking to transfer from my local college (UMass Boston) to a higher caliber school, the University of Maryland at College Park. I'm going into my junior year. It's been killing my mind thinking about whether or not to transfer.

Since I'm a transfer student its harder to get aid so I basically have to pay it all out of pocket and it'll probably end up getting 40k in student loans my last two years. At my current school I barely have any loans, and I could potentially double major in Economics and Business, but I'll probably not have the same chance at Maryland.

Basically, do you think the education there is worth 40k of loans? I just don't want to buried under massive amounts of loan on graduation.

Any input would be great! thanks!

Why do you want to go to College Park if it’s unaffordable and doesn’t have your program? I’m confused! Have you looked for a school that does meet your needs? I think $40K in loans is alot, especially if you’re going to grad school later.

40K is too much. Try to stay within the Stafford limits, even if that means choosing a different college.

They do have my program, it would just probably be harder to double major because I would have to deal with transferring credits and what not.

But yeah, I’m just worried about when I’m a applying for grad schools, I just feel that College Park would be looked at better than UMass Boston, same thing with job searching. But then again, I feel that my job experience should make up for the school difference (I’ve interned at the Federal Reserve for the past 4 years)

40k in loans is way too much for some “prestige” on your college degree, especially when you are going on to grad school. You will end up taking out enough in loans during your graduate years, limit the loans now while you can.

If you want better job opportunities, forget adding the additional 40k and focus on finding good P/T job and internship opportunities where you are at. Experience, even if volunteering at a local company in the Boston area, will add far more job credibility than the paper from the supposed more prestigious school.

I just covered this in a blog post you might find interesting… or aggravating in some cases.
